"BlackBerry Playbook will be available in stores Best Buy, BestBuy Mobile, Best Buy Canada and Future Shop on 19 April," said Soltys. Besides the stores, a number of partners also will distribute these products in the U.S. and Canada, such as telecommunications operators Sprint and Verizon Wireless.

BlackBerry Playbook comes with the concept of a device to access the web and enjoy multimedia content perfectly. The BlackBerry Tablet - PlayBook

Research In Motion's annual BlackBerry Developer Conference, CEO Mike Lazaridis announced the company's new tablet the PlayBook. The tablet will utilize an OS created by the recently acquired QNX (just as we'd heard previous to the announcement) called the BlackBerry Tablet OS which will offer full OpenGL and POSIX support alongside web standards such as HTML5 (which is all tied into RIM's new WebWorks SDK).

Lazaridis was joined on stage by the company's founder, Dan Dodge, who said that "QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before," and added that the PlayBook would be "an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players." RIM also touted the PlayBook's ability to handle Flash content via Flash 10.1, as well as Adobe AIR apps. The new slate which Lazaridis described as "the first professional tablet" will sport a 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multitouch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU (the company calls it the "fastest tablet ever"), 1GB of RAM, and a 3 megapixel front-facing camera along with a 5 megapixel rear lens (and yes, there will be video conferencing).

There was no mention of onboard storage capacity during the keynote, though the devices we just spied in our eyes-on post are labeled 16GB and 32GB on their back panels. The PlayBook will be capable of 1080p HD video, and comes equipped with an HDMI port as well as a microUSB jack, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1. The device clocks in at a svelte 5.1- by 7.6-inches, is only 0.4-inches thick, and weighs just 400g (or about 0.9 pounds).

In terms of interface, the OS looks like a mashup of webOS and the BlackBerry OS, even allowing for multitasking via what amounts to a "card" view. Interestingly, RIM and QNX boasted of the PlayBook's multimedia and gaming functions, but Mike Lazaridis also described the tablet as "an amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry." That's due largely in part to a function of the tablet which allows you to siphon data off of your BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth tethering and display it on your PlayBook (a la the ill-fated Palm Foleo).

While the PlayBook doesn't seem to rely on phone content alone, the press release from the company says that users can "use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data." RIM didn't hand out any solid launch dates beyond "early 2011," and of course, there was no mention of retail price. The BlackBerry Torch 9800 offers a few firsts for RIM and AT&T. The Torch is RIM's first attempt at a BlackBerry that sports both a full QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen. It's also the first commercially available BlackBerry that runs the new BlackBerry 6 operating system, which offers a host of new features that include a pull-down notification curtain, universal search, and new virtual QWERTY keyboards.

While the device is largely an improvement over other BlackBerry models, there's still a number of areas that put the Torch 9800 behind some of the competition running other, more modern operating systems. Its battery life could use some work, too, but overall it's a device that BlackBerry fans will want to consider when purchasing their next smartphone.

The first thing you'll notice about the Torch, obviously, is that it looks very much like the current crop of BlackBerry devices. Besides that fact that yes, it slides open, you're basically dealing with the same industrial design that we've come to know from RIM over the past two years or so. Sure, there are variations on a theme, but side-by-side with the Bold 9700, it's obvious to see where Torch got its looks from.

The size and shape of the device is nearly identical to the 9700, and in fact, its dimensions (4.4-inches up and down by 2.4-inches across when closed) are within spitting distance of the simpler, portrait QWERTY model. The thickness differs by a tiny margin (the Torch is 0.57-inches thick, while the Bold is 0.56-inches), though for some reason it feels much more significant when holding the two in your hand. Compared to more streamlined devices like the Captivate or iPhone 4... well, it has a full keyboard, okay? The Torch keeps the familiar, metal-like (it's plastic) bezel around the edges of the phone, looping around back just as with the Bold, though this time it's split in two pieces due to the separate screen and keyboard portions of the phone. The front of the device is mostly taken up by the Torch's 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen (480 x 360, just like the Storm and Storm2), though you'll find the familiar BlackBerry call, menu, back, and end buttons and optical trackpad just below the display. Along the right side of the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rockers, and user-assignable convenience key (it defaults to the camera), while the left side houses only the Micro USB jack. Up top there are mute and lock buttons, while the phone's 5 megapixel camera and LED flash sit in a familiar spot along the back of the phone.

Where to get BlackBerry Theme Studio?

You can download BlackBerry Theme Studio for free from www.blackberry.com/themestudio. It’s an application for Windows – just download it onto your computer and install.

You’ll notice that BlackBerry Theme Studio actually contains two products in the suite: Theme Builder, and Composer.

BlackBerry Theme Builder is the “theme design” tool of the suite. BlackBerry Theme Builder lets you change the images that get used for things like icons, background graphics and cursors. You can also adjust the fonts, change the position of many objects on the screen, decide which applications appear and change the color and properties of things like dialog boxes.

The main interface of BlackBerry Theme Builder is divided into a few different parts:

Some of the best ideas come when we're out and about. Instead of scrambling for a pen and paper to write your thoughts down, you could use BBNotePad instead.

BBNotepad is a free text editor for that is a bit more powerful than the MemoPad app that comes built into the BlackBerry operating system. The program makes the note-taking process very quick and easy, allowing you to choose between SureType and Multitap input systems. The app can export your notes as memos or as documents in TXT format, that can then be read on any computer.

BBNotepad includes some handy editing features, including a reliable spell check and a handy text search facility. The major difference between BBNotepad and MemoPad is in the customizable settings, of which BBNotepad has many. You can alter the font size, set notes as read only, and change the reading and writing format.

BBNotepad lets you save notes either to your BlackBerry's internal storage, or to your SD card. So, it's perfect for making notes to be read on your computer, or for exchanging memos with other BlackBerry users.

It's a shame there aren't a few more formatting options, but as a slimline text editor, BBNotepad makes for a more powerful alternative to MemoPad.

Blackberry RIM's devices are best suited for businessmen, but this doesn't mean that they can't have fun with them once in a while. At least, this is what Mobigloo thinks, and for this reason it developed a game especially designed for all BlackBerry models with a color screen and 900Kb of free memory space, according to the official announcement. Basically, this means that Nintaii works with almost all the BlackBerry devices that are currently on the market, which is not such a bad thing – portability is always good.

Back to what this game does. Well, first of all, this is not a 3D anime game, nor an action title. Nintaii is more of a brain twisting puzzle game of rolling blocks and switches. What players need to do is roll their block over the course of the 100-level challenge Nintaii is. The game is really simple in concept, but really challenging when played, like most puzzle games.

Taking a peek at what the name means, we found out that the Japanese kanjii “nintai” means patience, perseverance or endurance, just the things needed to go through all 100 unique stages designed in this game. Players will have to tumble their rectangular block through each stage, and deposit it into the square hole at the end. They will also encounter road blocks and arrows at many levels, as well as switches that can be activated when the block stands on them.

The features of the game, besides the 100 stages, include special sound effects, hall of fame, customized themes and “Fly Over Stage.” Another noteworthy thing about this game is that it can be played by using only the trackball.

Review BlackBerry Bold 9900 aka Pluto

For quite some time now RIM has been working on a device that looks like a Blackberry Bold with its full QWERTY keyboard along with a touchscreen with SurePress technology, like the one on the Blackberry Storm. The final product? The Blackberry Bold 9900, codenamed Pluto.

First, full credit goes to the Blackberry Bold 9000 for introducing a new revolutionary and stylish design change to Blackberry devices which tended to adopt the same old boring appearance over and over again. But with the Bold everything has changed and Blackberry devices such as the Blackberry Bold 9030 are beginning to display an amazing sense of design know-how, including being sleek, beautiful and compact. After the Bold became a huge hit, RIM started working on its successor and codenamed it Pluto. It was planned to be launched somewhat earlier, but things haven't worked out that way and the project has been often delayed. Now rumors are that the same device will be introduced in the markets and renamed the Blackberry Bold 9900.

The big question is, will it adopt the same design specification as we have witnessed in the original Bold or it will be one step further than its prototype. As confirmed from reliable sources the Bold 9900 will have the same full QWERTY keyboard with 39 keys as you have seen on its predecessor along with a touchscreen with SurePress technology just like the one we have witnessed in Blackberry Storm. But it will be interesting to know if this device will have the same old trackball as poisoning device. Until now, the news is that the trackball which we have come to love so much will be missing from the scenario.

You can see some images of this new device from Rogers at websites like Crackberry.com, but till date nobody is sure (not even the folks at Crackberry) if these images are real or excellent Photshop manipulations.

What we do know is that it will be a 3G compatible device with quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS support. While It is also supposed to have the same Intel XScale 624MHz processor as that of Blackberry Bold with 128 MB of the internal and 1.21 GB of flash memory out of which 1.15 GB will be user accessible non-volatile storage. Most likely, it will run on Blackberry 4.7 or the new 5.0 operating system.

At this stage, very little information is available about the hardware specifications and features or functions of the device, but our sources are saying that it will surely have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 port, 3.5 mm headphone jack, microSD card slot, assisted GPS with maps, a removable Lithium-Ion battery and most probably a 3.2 mega-pixel camera with an LED flash based on early reports.

This device was planned to be released by the end of third-quarter of 2009, but most probably it will only see the markets in the beginning of 2010. Personally, I am a big Blackberry fan and it would be nice to get more updates from readers on this device.

The Blackberry Curve 9220 blends Blackberry Bold’s full QWERTY keyboard, a large touchscreen first witnessed on the Blackberry Storm and many features found on the Blackberry Curve 8900. Other high-end features include a 3.2 mega-pixel camera, 3G network compatibility, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

A Preview of Main Features and Performance of Blackberry Curve 9220 Magnum

The most significant change in this new Blackberry model is its form factor, until now we have seen Blackberries with touchscreens or QWERTY keyboards, but none have offered a combination of both offerings. This Smartphone will be the first Blackberry to offer both a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard! It will feature a 2.4 inch TFT screen at a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels and an automatic back-lit full QWERTY keyboard with 39 keys. For those of you wondering, yes the presence of trackball as a positioning device will also still be available, I like to think of the device much like a Tablet PC that can use a mouse, keyboard and touchscreen all at the same time as needed. It will also feature the Blackberry 4.6 operating system and a fast processor operating at a frequency of 600 MHz or more. The Blackberry Magnum will also be 3G compatible and capable of global roaming with quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS support. The memory won't quite be up to par only featuring 128 MB of internal memory and 256 MB of flash memory, which is adequate for most processes but nothing to write home about.

The Blackberry Curve 9220 will also support data network that include GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA and will have a Blackberry browser with RSS reader that you have more than likely noticed via previous versions. It will also feature Bluetooth version 2.0 with EDR support and an 802.11b/g wireless LAN, boosting the phone’s connectivity to a broader range of options.

According to sources, it will have an in-built GPS receiver with features like geo-tagging and Assisted GPS and feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a microUSB port for connecting to other devices and computers. It will also hold a microSD/microSDHC card slot, but I am still uncertain about the capacity of the memory that will come with the device package. Most likely it will also have instant messaging clients like Yahoo messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, ICQ and Google talk while using the same old user-friendly interface to send SMS, MMS, e-mails and instant messages.

Like all other Blackberry devices it will be loaded with business applications such as the phone organizer which will have features like scheduler, calendar, clock, alarm, currency converter, voice note recorder and To-Do lists. Phone book capacity will also depend upon external memory installed on the device and it will have features like multiple phone numbers per person, ring ID and photo ID. It will furthermore be able to work in speakerphone mode and will have voice features including voice commands, voice recording and voice dialing along with phone profiles and vibration alerts. It will be interesting to see what new games are installed on the phone as they have been increasing in their "Coolness Factor" on devices of recent, while also featuring a new interface for the media player.

According to further sources it will also carry the same 3.2 mega-pixel camera with LED flash that we have seen on the , with features that include auto-focus, digital zoom and image stabilization. Personally, I am not much thrilled by the quality of this camera, but it will be interesting to see if RIM works out something new in terms of quality.

The phone will also be installed with a standard removable Lithium-Ion battery that we have seen in some previous Blackberry models. Capacity of the battery is still unknown, but Blackberry phones usually come with a great battery back-up and I am sure this device won’t be an exception.

It is just a matter of time before the Blackberry Curve 9220 Magnum will be launched, industry reports put the date at sometime in September 2009. Whenever it's released one thing is for certain its a cool hybrid design with nice features that is sure to give Business and Personal Consumers another device to rave about, personally I can't wait!

Review BlackBerry Onyx

With so many existing and upcoming BlackBerry device models that look similar (yet different), it's becoming a bit confusing to differentiate at a glance between models. We have an upcoming article with our theory behind RIM's multiple device strategy, but in the meantime the big thing to note about Onyx is that's unassuming and slick form factor packs a ton of punch:

* 3G device - GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS (Bands: 850, 900, 1800, 1900)
* 480 by 360 display, beveled edges
* 256 megabytes of internal memory (same as Curve 8900, 8520)
* 1550mAh M-S1 battery (same as Bold)
* 3.2 megapixel camera, with flash and auto focus
* Processor: Not 100% sure actually, but am hearing its a Tavor processor that may be running even a bit quicker than the Bold's 624MHz processor (definitely seems snappy)
* GPS, WiFi (UMA capable but we'll see what happens there), and all the normal stuff you'd expect on a BlackBerry smartphone

Keyboard – The top three rows of the Onyx’s keyboard appear to be identical to the that of the BlackBerry 9630’s, but the bottom row differs in that the keys are a millimeter or two shorter. I don’t think the downsize hurts there use – overall this is a very nice keyboard that should be comfy for everyone. Small hands, big hands or somewhere in the middle, both this keyboard and the 9630’s keyboard are just awesome.

Trackball – The Onyx reviewed has a trackball, but it is possible that by the time it goes into production that it may feature the optical trackpad found on the Curve 8520. I’m realllly in love with the trackpad, so hope it does. But even with the trackball, the navigation is all good.

Battery Cover – Another BlackBerry smartphone, another battery cover design. Seriously, it’s almost shocking how much the battery doors change from model to model. I don’t know if this means they just haven’t got it quite right yet, or if it means they design it last (once they pack all the guts under the hood) and figure out how to make it work. The Onyx features a latch-less design (no buttons to depress). There’s little hooks on the inside of the door at the top that slide into grooves on the phone. You simply apply a little pressure on the battery cover at the top (just under the camera) and slide down and the door comes off easily. It seems to work pretty well.

Micro SD Card - The location of the Micro SD card slot is pretty cool. Pull off the battery cover (a good thing - having it external is one more hole to collect dust) and it's located above the battery/below the camera and is mounted at an angle. It's a great design.

Battery - The Onyx uses the same battery as the BlackBerry Bold, which it needs to power the processor and radios and provide enough juice to power the unit through the day. On this early OS software the battery is getting drained pretty quick, but am sure by the time the Onyx hits the market battery life will be on par with other models. Under the battery there is room for a SIM card and that's it. It's a very clean design under the battery door.

Camera - You can expect the same quality of photos out of the Onyx as the Curve 8900 (which takes some great snapshots) thanks to its 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus.

Other Stuff - With the device software being so early stage, it's too soon to start looking at performance type stuff (3G/WiFi speeds) or OS stuff (web browser), but at the end of the day it's clear from the specs and hardware that for those who don't want a touchscreen the Onyx will be the next must-have BlackBerry.

Review BlackBerry Gemini 9300

The Blackberry 9300 Gemini is one of the newest additions to the Blackberry family. The Blackberry Gemini specifications look excellent for the new digital age. The Blackberry 9300 looks good with a silver matte finish. The screen is large with a good resolution which allows high detail images to be displayed. The CPU will be faster than the previous models. The Blackberry Gemini has all the standard connectivity options such as quad band GSM, GPRS and EDGE. HSDPA and Wi-Fi are also present allowing the user to have an even enhanced web browsing experience. The keyboard is good and easy to use. The keys look easy to use and are more rounded than previous Blackberry models. The phone also has tri band UMTS which makes worldwide roaming easy and efficient.

Blackberry Gemini resembles the Blackberry 9000 Bold that was released a few months back. It is however a much more improved version and is loaded with many more features than its predecessor. Though the company has not given out any date of release it is expected that the mobile phone will be available in Q4, 2009.

Specs

There has not been much information about the specifications of the mobile. However from whatever has been released we can get an idea that it will be a much advanced phone and will have a number of attractive features.

The mobile phones come with a higher resolution display. There is also an enhanced processor that will be faster. The phone has a 3.2 megapixel camera with GPS, Wi-Fi, as well as tri-band UMTS/HSDPA support. Another major point of difference is in the keyboard of the latter mobile that will have a rounded keyboard. The mobile phone has a triband 3G or HSDPA and also a quad band GSM. Some of the other features that are there in the mobile include as pocket office, GPS function, music player and video player and finally a digital camera.

The company has not yet confirmed whether there would be GPS and Wi-Fi but there are chances that there would be these features. The camera specs are not confirmed as well but we can expect it to be 3.2egapixels or even better. We will have to wait for the company to release some more information about the device.

Looks & Design

The new blackberry is a possible successor of the blackberry 8900. As far as the design is concerned the 9300 does not seem to be very different from 8900. The phone is a perfect blend of good looks and functionality. It has an impressive design that does not have any hardware keys located on the body of the mobile phone. The design is similar to that of an iPhone. However the mobile phone comes with a GPS receiver and this is what the company seems to be best at.

The phone measures 112 x 58.1 x 14.6 mm. The screen of the new mobile will be bigger than the 8900 and will also have a much higher resolution. The mobile phone will also have an improved CPU. It might include something more powerful than the 624MHz processor. The keyboard of the new set is more rounded than blackberry 8900. The end/send keys are rounded instead f lying flat on the sides of the mobile.

Overall

The company has also not given out any information about the price of the product. It is expected that the mobile will be available in a silver case. The phone will have a quad-band GSM as well as triband HSDPA connectivity. There has not been any information about the release date of the mobile phone into the market. It can however be expected that the phone will be available by the end of 2009. The mobile is slated to come with a host of wonderful features that are sure to be appreciated by the customers.

Review BlackBerry Storm 9530

The Storm outperforms most BlackBerrys with its crisp, innovative touch-button screen. Boasting a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus still and video camera, the Storm impresses by packing numerous features into its sleek and sturdy form-factor.

There is a lot to like about this device, including its sharp display, an auto-focus 3.2 megapixel camera, and applications like Visual Voicemail, but there are still some glaring problems. Even after updating its operating system with Verizon's new patch, there is still lag present in a lot of applications which hinders the phone's functionality in many areas. And the lack of Wi-Fi and QWERTY keyboard, and unrelenting fingerprints detract from the innovative hardware.

There are issues that Verizon and RIM will be able to address via further firmware updates, but there are others (read: lack of Wi-Fi) that can only be incorporated into future Storm versions.

Touchscreen

BlackBerry Storm 9530The Storm's touch-button screen is the focus of this smartphone.

There are two options for working the screen. Using one of these, you slide your fingers across the screen to select an item or to shift between two items like the iPhone. Switching to the second setting allows you to select items by depressing the screen. Pushing the BlackBerry key (one of four keys on the front of the device) pulls up a list of menu items. You can navigate the menu by dragging your fingers to move across rows or columns and selecting items with a tap.

When I first picked up the Storm, I would just click right onto a button to select something the way I'm used to on an iPhone. I've since learned that I can rest my finger on the button first and then press in the screen to select. This doesn't take much longer than pressing the button right away as you would on an iPhone, and it greatly increases accuracy when selecting or typing. When you rest your fingers over a button to select it, it highlights blue. Although this is helpful in confirming your choice, it is also a little counter-intuitive because the letter or item that lights up is the one that your finger is on. If you have larger fingers, this could be a serious problem.

Though there are some inconsistent screen features that need development, the brightness of the screen is rock solid. The screen is so bright that I reset it to 10% and even at this level the screen is readable indoors and out.

Under ideal conditions, the screen works well, and is pretty fun to use. It's evident that the folks at RIM did their due diligence in researching and designing what the screen should do, how it should do it, and had a clear vision for the Storm's screen experience.

But there are two things to consider about the Storm's screen: One is how it looks and the other is how it functions. Does the screen look good? Yes, absolutely. Does it function the way it should, every time, without any frustrations? Absolutely not.

I haven't experienced any problems with the actual responsiveness of the phone, as the Storm has never missed my click or misinterpreted my finger slide. Rather, most of the problems seem related to executing the instructions. These are so significant that I have devoted an entire section of this review to them, called Bugs and Slow-Downs.

There are a number of other smaller issues with the Storm's display, too.

One of its quirks reveals itself at night. Because there is a gap around the screen -- about four paper-widths' wide -- when it's dark, you can see light around the edges of the screen. It doesn't distract from the Storm's functionality or impact its performance, but it is noticeable. Like seeing a light around the cracks in a door frame, I wondered what's going on behind it, and seriously considered opening it up to find out. In the end, rationality prevailed and I simply accepted it.

An oversight with no easy solution is the inability to use this phone when wearing gloves. The touchscreen is unresponsive, and even pressing the screen to select whatever is currently highlighted doesn't work. This is an issue with the iPhone as well. The hard buttons on the front of the phone mean you can still pick up and end calls, and even call the last person in your call log.

The last question about screen design is how long can it last. It feels as if the entire screen sits upon very few contact points to give it the push-button feeling. If this is the case, then every time the screen is pushed down, these contact points are being worn. On a traditional BlackBerry or other smartphone, there are multiple contact points to distribute the wear over; I can't help but wonder if this touchscreen will have the same longevity as other phones.

Bugs and Slow Downs

RIM has long been praised for its reliable, well built devices aimed at the business market. With the advent of the Pearl Flip, Bold, and now the Storm, these perceptions are changing. Although the newest RIM products (specifically the Storm and Pearl Flip) are more consumer friendly, there are still some kinks to be worked out. The most noticeable glitch in the Storm is lag present across a range of functions.

When I first powered up the Storm, the persistent lag gave me ample opportunity to appreciate the sharp screen. The screen would take on average up to four to five seconds to switch between landscape and portrait modes when turning the phone, with only the base applications running.

Late last week, RIM and Verizon officially released an operating system update for the BlackBerry Storm 9530 -- Firmware 4.7.0.75 -- and I immediately installed it on my review unit. There is often still a couple of seconds of lag with the updated OS, but it quickly and more reliably switches than the original version did. I discovered that with a suave flick of my hand I could prompt the phone to switch quicker, but the novelty of that trick got old fast.

The updated OS addresses the major lag problems associated with the Storm, but it still doesn't work as seamlessly as it should. Before, the lag while flipping through pictures took so long I sometimes wondered if the unit had frozen. Now, the pictures flip more reliably, but there is still lag when trying to flip through a whole scroll of pictures.

Keyboard

With the touchscreen and letter/item highlighting, typing on the Storm is easier than the iPhone, but not nearly as easy as typing on a hardware keyboard.

There are inaccurate strikes inherent with any small keyboard, but the button-screen is, in some ways, a major downfall for this phone. If you're typing quickly on the phone, it's possible for your fingers to move too quickly for the screen to come back up before you need to press it in again. This results in a cap on how fast you are able to type on the Storm regardless of how accurate you become.

this won't be a problem for an occasional user, but if you're a power-user on the fast track to arthritic hands, stick to the Bold. In short, even when correcting misspellings on the fly, the touch screen is no replacement for a regular keyboard.

Design

BlackBerry Storm vs. BlackBerry Bold

The Storm's creators kept its design simple and functional.

It has a trapezoidal shape with rounded edges. The screen dominates the front of the phone, and there are four simple buttons on the bottom: "talk", the BlackBerry menu key, "return", and "end/power". These keys, unlike those on the Bold, are proportional and do not take up more space than needed.

The sides of the phone feature one convenience key on each side as well as volume buttons.

The back of the phone boasts a brushed metallic finish, with the camera lens and flash near the top of the device.

A mute key and lock key crown the top corner of the phone. Unboxing the Storm, it was not immediately clear to me that these were keys but once I got used to them, they were actually pretty cool. Locking the phone can take up to four seconds after depressing the button and leaves room for improvement; unlocking is quicker.

Call Quality

Verizon's CDMA call quality on the Storm is consistent and good. It often connects calls faster than ones I make over AT&T's network, though there is a bit of delay answering calls via the touchscreen as compared to hitting the talk button on the phone itself.

When on a call, the speaker, mute, flash, and add participant features appear as buttons on the screen by default. Although they're conveniently placed, they're easy to hit by accident if you're trying to balance the phone on your shoulder. There is nothing more confusing to both parties than wondering why the other end can't hear your yelling, only to realize that you've accidentally muted the call.

My only other qualm with the in-call functionality is that holding on to the back finished-metal battery casing can become quite cold now that winter is upon us in the north-east.

The Storm 9530 offers both CDMA and GSM support, so you can use it when traveling outside of the U.S. You can't use the GSM service in any place where Verizon's CDMA network is available, and I didn't travel to Europe or Asia while writing this review, so I wasn't able to test this feature.

Browsing the Web

The Storm's web browser is leagues ahead of other BlackBerrys. Although it still lacks support for certain streaming services, it is more robust and capable than the ones on many smartphones. It renders pages well, supports sites such as the mobile version of YouTube.com, and even allows you to select emulation modes to help pages with rendering issues.

When using the browser, it's easy to display a page at a comfortable zoom level in landscape mode. You can navigate the page by dragging your fingers across the screen. Resting your fingers on hypertext will highlight the link, and you can select it by pressing in the screen. The ease of navigation for the Storm showcases the best browsing experience I've seen on a BlackBerry, and is better than what I've experienced on most other smartphones.

You can tell the browser to represent itself as the BlackBerry browser, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. I haven't come across a situation where I've had to use this feature, but it could come in handy under the right circumstances.

The Storm's lack of Wi-Fi is most obvious when browsing the Web. While having a capable browser is great, it needs to be paired with a capable connection. Verizon's EV-DO network is usable, but is consistently slower than AT&T's 3G network in my experience. The exclusion of Wi-Fi bars the Storm from consideration as a truly capable device.

Texting and Messaging

The Storm's list of applications and messaging services is another testament to its consumer-centric orientation. Included with this smartphone is Flickr, Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, and BlackBerry Messenger.

Combining these with texting, MMSing, and email, it's easy to see why you'll likely spend most of your time on the keyboard rather than on the phone.

Other Applications

Visual Voicemail - The Storm boasts Visual Voicemail, which displays on the screen who left you a voicemail and how long it is. The application takes about 10 seconds longer than normal to report the voicemail, but it's usefulness is worth the short wait. Under the Visual Voicemail menu, you can choose to compose a new text/MMS, call back the caller, erase the message, or reply to the caller via SMS or voice message.

VZ Navigator - The Storm features BlackBerry maps as well as Verizon's VZ Navigator. The VZ Navigator give spoken turn-by-turn directions, and incorporates traffic into its narration. It works as claimed, but beyond the voice narration, it probably isn't worth the $10/month. Alternatives such as Google Maps are free (though lacking in audio directions). Google Maps also offers transit directions and walking directions, neither of which VZ Navigator offers.

DataViz Documents to Go - As with the Bold and the Pearl Flip, the Storm boasts DataViz' Documents to Go suite, which offers a mobile solution for managing, editing, and creating Word documents, Excel files, and PowerPoint presentations. You can easily view, download, and edit files, but creating a file and more advanced editing and formatting options are available only with a $70 update to the premium version.

Application Center - The application center offers a centralized place on the Storm to manage OTA updates for applications. This is a convenient solution to opening up individual applications to check for updates.

Camera/Video/Audio Recording

The camera is one of Storm's strongest assets.

When the camera is called up, the screen serves as the viewfinder. Resting your finger on the camera button displays a white box, a feature of the auto-focus. After focusing, the box becomes green, at which point pushing in the screen will take the picture. Zooming in or out is as easy as rolling your fingers across the screen.

The resolution on the camera is great; however the shutter speed is slow, so there is some blur if the subject is moving.

The camera's menus have a logical layout and are user-friendly. The screen displays the approximate number of pictures remaining, zoom level, flash mode (defaulted to automatic), the flash status, and the status of location-aware features. After snapping a pic, the photo is displayed along with options across the bottom of the screen including "new picture", "set picture as a caller ID or home screen", "rename", "delete" , and "send.". Any social networking applications such as Flickr, Facebook, messengers etc. are integrated into the "send" option, in addition the standard email and MMS options.

Opening the pictures folder, you can view your pictures and thumb through them slide-reel style by dragging your fingers across the screen.

Overall, this is among the best of the phone cameras I've used, but it's still no replacement for a digital camera.

The video camera also stands out on the Storm. Videos have fairly good quality, clear sound, and the 8 GB card that came shipped with my unit can hold plenty of footage. The video camera also has the option of a video light, which is bright enough to be useful when shooting in low light. This also doubles as a handy flashlight in a pinch.
Battery Life

With the original version of the operating system and moderate use (mostly data as opposed to voice), I was generally able to get about two days of battery out of the Storm. With the updated OS, I've experienced slower battery drain. After keeping the Storm on for 36 hours with only light use (mostly email), I still have 50% remaining life.

The .75 OS update also resolves the previous issue of not being able to use the phone while it was charging.

I went out of town shortly after receiving my Storm, where I soon discovered the largest design flaw of the phone - it has a micro-USB as opposed to the mini-USB that other BlackBerrys feature. I raised the same issue when reviewing the BlackBerry Pearl Flip, and warned that this could be a potential deal breaker. I reaffirm that sentiment now and warn that if it's not a deal breaker, it's definitely an annoyance. With a phone so new, not all traditional electronic retailers (e.g. Radio Shack) carry the chargers. I was able to pick up a generic charger at Best Buy, but charging the phone was a painful process, as the Storm sometimes didn't recognize the charger.

Accessories

Billed as a "world phone", the Storm includes several European chargers in the box. A pretty neat inclusion, however I nearly instantaneously learned that this was included because chances are you won't be able to find a replacement for this device's plugs when traveling.

In addition to the user manual, quick shortcuts guide, CD, USB cable, adapters and AC charger, there's also a flash drive thrown into the box. Cool.

I've already mentioned the 8 GB microSD card that comes bundled with the Storm, but it bears repeating.

Conclusion

The Storm has some unique features that unmistakably mark RIM's attempt to capture some of the strong consumer smartphone market that the iPhone currently dominates. RIM is relying on its name to be able to build buzz around the device, but unfortunately it largely fails to deliver an infallible device that would live up to BlackBerry users' high expectations.

The touch screen is cool, but I'm not sure it's a better solution than alternative navigation methods. However, the large, crisp screen is nonetheless phenomenal and is easily the best feature of the Storm.

The sharp screen with its button-like functionality is a major selling point; the abundance and usefulness of the preloaded applications give users plenty to play with out of the box, and the camera is exceptional. All of these bode very well for the Storm but it is not without its shortcomings. The lack of Wi-Fi, the upper limit on how fast and accurately you can type on the touchscreen, and the current lag are all major downgrades in my book. Although the latter can hopefully be rectified with an update, users should be able to buy a reliable device that performs as promised out of the box with no updating necessary.

As a smartphone enthusiast, I like the Storm because it represents the start of a new generation of touchscreen-based devices from RIM. Those familiar with BlackBerry will find the Storm an entertaining gadget, but hardly the pinnacle of this company's capabilities.

The bottom line is that I've been carrying a Storm and a Bold in my pocket, and when I need to use a phone for something, it's the Bold I instinctively reach for. In my opinion, the Storm is still one revision away from becoming the phone that RIM and most users want it to be.

Toss in RIM's airtight push e-mail, a QWERTY keyboard, and a media player, and you have a fully loaded smart phone that will keep globe-trotters connected, productive, and entertained.

The 8830 World Edition should look familiar to BlackBerry aficionados, with its 8800-styled trackball and QWERTY keyboard, but its executive-chic metallic-silver body more closely resembles the Curve. At just 4.6 ounces and 4.4 x 2.6 x 0.6 inches, it easily slips into a shirt or jacket pocket. Navigating menus was a cinch, thanks to the silky-smooth glide of the trackball.

Although it lacks the 8800's GPS functionality, the 4.6-ounce handheld does what all BlackBerry models do best: handle e-mail. The 8830 World Edition's built-in wizard made setting up our Gmail account a snap (users can create a maximum of ten accounts), and within a few minutes we were receiving messages. BlackBerry Messenger is included, but we preferred to use the free Google Talk for BlackBerry Devices download, as it's a more universal communication tool. You can also try IM+ ($49.95; shapeservices.com), which works with Google Talk as well as AOL, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo.

At the heart of the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition is its unique dual-network compatibility. Verizon Wireless' new Global BlackBerry service, which includes a SIM card-a rarity for a Verizon phone-allows customers to place and receive calls from more than 150 countries and send and receive e-mail in the United States, Canada, and more than 60 other nations. When in the United States, chatters are given voice time via Verizon's CDMA network, but when venturing overseas, the phone automatically connects to local GSM/GPRS networks. Unfortunately, this device doesn't support faster EDGE data networks overseas.

When in GSM mode, the 8830 World Edition runs on only the 900-MHz and 1800-MHz international frequencies. While this is a bit disappointing to those who may want to pop their AT&T or T-Mobile SIM cards into the phone here in the States, it's the closest thing to having an unlocked phone while traveling abroad, without having to fork over extra cash for another handset.

Not only does the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition offer unprecedented voice freedom for business travelers, it also offers a wealth of e-mail options. Those who sign up for the Global BlackBerry service ($69.99 or $64.99 with a qualifying voice plan) will receive unlimited e-mail in the United States, Canada, and more than 60 countries worldwide. Customers can also opt for a "Pay As You Go" plan with any qualifying voice plan for $20 per megabyte. Finally, e-mailers looking for a method to dive into their Inboxes only in the United States can invest in an unlimited e-mail plan beginning at $49.99 per month.

Web-surfing stateside was pretty snappy thanks to the 8830 World Edition's high-speed EV-DO connection. The photo-heavy CNN.com consistently loaded in a little less than 18 seconds. We also experienced good call quality on Verizon's network, but as with the Blackberry 8800 and the BlackBerry Curve, we would have liked more volume. The phone is rated at 220 minutes of talk time, and we saw about four days of periodic use before needing to charge the battery.

The 8830 World Edition also supports voice dialing and recognized every name we threw at it, with the exception of "Horatio," which required multiple voice commands to dial correctly. Using Bluetooth, we were able to sync to a wireless headset for hands-free calls. Like the BlackBerry 8800, this device doesn't support stereo Bluetooth headsets, so you'll have to go the wired route when listening to tunes.

The bundled copy of Roxio Media Manager 9 features a split-screen interface that makes dragging and dropping media files between your notebook and handset a breeze. Transferred photos looked crisp and colorful on the bright display, and video (H.264, WMV, MPEG-4) played smoothly. The 8830 features surprisingly loud speakers for enjoying music (AAC, MP3, WMA), but they project only average audio quality. Make sure you have a microSD Card on hand, as the paltry 64MB of onboard memory fills up quickly.

When the BlackBerry 8820 was launched in late 2007, it was the first BlackBerry phone that supported Wi-Fi networks. Today, however, many BlackBerrys and other smartphones include support for wireless networks. So is there a compelling reason to choose the BlackBerry 8820 instead of today's newer, fancier smartphones? Business users may think so.

Design

PROS: The BlackBerry 8820 has a sleek, square look; it's an attractive phone. The full QWERTY keyboard is small, but very easy to use for typing. And navigating through the phone with the trackball, which sits right underneath the display, is quite easy.

CONS: The 2.4-inch screen looks nice, but it feels a bit small. And it can't compare with the stunning screen found on the newer BlackBerry Bold.

Making Calls

PROS: The 8820 offered very good voice quality; my callers sounded very clear and they said the same about me. The speakerphone was easy to access and provided plenty of volume. The T-Mobile 8820 also can use wireless networks to make voice calls; this allows you to save your monthly allotment of voice minutes and place calls where you have access to a wireless hotspot, but where a cellular signal may be weak.

CONS: The 8820 can feel a bit boxy when held next to your ear.

Browsing the Web

PROS: The ability to surf the Web using wireless hotspots makes for a much speedier experience.

CONS: It's a good thing the 8820 supports Wi-Fi, because it lacks support for a true 3G network. It runs on AT&T's EDGE network, not the speedy HSDPA network. And it features an older version of the BlackBerry browser, which can make Web pages difficult to view.

Messaging

PROS: The 8820 is an awesome messaging phone. It will support up to 10 personal or business e-mail accounts, and adds support for consumer instant messaging applications, too.

Software

PROS: You get access to AT&T's TeleNav navigation service, which delivers turn-by-turn directions (for an extra monthly fee).

CONS: Unlike some of the newer BlackBerry phones (like the Bold or the Storm), the 8820 does not include a productivity suite. So, if you'd like to edit Office documents, you'll need to provide your own software application.

Multimedia

PROS: The 8820 comes with access to AT&T's Mobile Music service. This lets you access subscription music services like XM Satellite Radio. You also get a basic MP3 player.

CONS: The 8820 lacks a camera.

Business users will like the BlackBerry 8820's excellent messaging options--especially if they work an in an environment that forbids camera phones. But consumers looking for a phone that knows how to have fun should consider the BlackBerry Curve or the Bold instead.

Review BlackBerry 8800

For a long time, BlackBerry devices were seen primarily as business tools, but the consumer-friendly BlackBerry Pearl shed that image. Now the BlackBerry 8800 combines a sleek look and a bevy of multimedia features reminiscent of the Pearl's with a full QWERTY keyboard. The 8800 retains RIM's business focus, however, by leaving off extras such as the camera found on the Pearl.

RIM claims that the 8800, which is available from AT&T/Cingular for $350 with a two-year contract, is the thinnest full-QWERTY BlackBerry yet. At first glance it looks more like Samsung's BlackJack than like a BlackBerry. It forgoes the typical broadly curved shape of most BlackBerry devices for leaner, straighter lines and a squared-off look. It measures 4.5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by just under 0.6 inch thick, making it slightly larger than the BlackJack.

The result is a good-looking phone that feels solid in your hand. With the 8800's slimmer design, however, comes a more crowded keyboard: The keys are much closer together than they were on previous models; each has a raised edge to make distinguishing them easy; and we found it easier to type on them than on most other phones' keyboards. Like the Pearl, the 8800 lacks a jogwheel on its right spine for navigation; instead, it comes with a trackball situated directly beneath the screen. Though the trackball is easy to use and allows multidirectional scrolling, I prefer a jogwheel for navigation.

At 4.7 ounces, the 8800 is heavier than some competing models, but even so it's reasonably comfortable to hold during prolonged conversations. Voice quality during calls was occasionally staticky, and I sometimes noticed an echo, but overall it was satisfactory. The speakerphone is easy to access, but its maximum volume isn't terribly impressive. Also, the 8800 supports Cingular's push-to-talk network (priced at an additional $10 per month). Talk-time battery life was superior: The phone was still going strong in our lab tests when we reached 10 hours--our test ceiling.

Though the 8800 lacks a camera, it does include the music and video players found on the Pearl. You can transfer media files to the phone via the included Desktop Manager software. The phone includes a microSD Card slot for additional storage, but the phone ships without a card, so you'll have to buy your own. The built-in music player is passable, allowing you to play, pause, and stop songs, and to create basic playlists. Audio quality was adequate but hardly exceptional--both through the external speaker and through the included headset. The quality of video playback was much better; content looked great on the 2.5-inch, 320-by-240-resolution display.

The 8800 offers built-in GPS functionality, and my review unit came preloaded with the TeleNav GPS Navigator service (available for $10 per month from Cingular). If you travel frequently, this could be the phone's killer app. It requires no add-on devices; you simply launch the app and go. The service occasionally dawdled in obtaining its initial satellite signal; but once it was up and running, it worked very well.

Like all BlackBerry devices, the 8800 handles e-mail exceptionally well. It can support ten accounts, including POP3, IMAP 4, and Web-based e-mail; and adding them is a breeze. For personal accounts, you simply enter your user name and password, on the phone or online; and within minutes, messages are delivered directly to your phone. For business accounts, you can sync the BlackBerry Enterprise server with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell Groupwise.

Instant messaging options are less abundant: The 8800 supports only the BlackBerry Messenger client. Support for a consumer-level client such as AIM, MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger would have been a nice touch.

Because the 8800 lacks support for Cingular's speedy HSDPA network, you'll have to rely on the slower EDGE network for Web browsing. The BlackBerry doesn't offer Wi-Fi support either, but it does include Bluetooth.

The BlackBerry 8800's strengths--in particular, its battery life, excellent e-mail handling, and built-in GPS features--outweigh its minuses. If you don't need a camera with your PDA phone, the 8800 is worth a look.

Review BlackBerry 8705g
